Where Am I Going In Life?

Introduction

How many of us have sat down during our junior or senior year of high school and thought, now what do I do with the rest of my like? This question can be answered in a variety of ways. The first is to look at what we are good at doing, what we enjoy doing, and what we would we can see ourselves doing. The answer is not the same for all three of these questions. To help you answer some of these and many more questions this web page was created for students to do an in-depth study over the topic of FINDING A JOB. This page is aimed at Texas students and a lot of the later activities will demonstrate this. Good luck and have fun!

Activities on ASPECT OF FINDING A JOB

The first step is to make a list of four or more things that answer the following questions:

1. What am I good at doing?

2. What do I enjoy doing?

3. What can I see myself doing?

4. Make a list of four or more jobs that you would like to do in the future and/or learn more about.

5. Where can I see myself in one year, two years, five years, and ten years?

Once you have done this, the next step is to complete the following activities.

Activity #1

My Future Beyond High School

Directions:

1.Go to the Internet page above by clicking on the title of this activity.

2. Look at the different options that are found on this page and read each of the options (e.g. Find a Job; Join the Military; Volunteer Work; Vo-Tech)

3. Make a list of two or more of these options that you would be interested in doing.

Activity #2

The Career Interests Game©

Directions:

1. Go to the Internet page above by clicking on the title of this activity.

2. Look at each of the six categories at the bottom of the web page. You can do this by clicking on the titles of the categories (e.g. Realistic, Investigative, Social, Artistic).

3. Write down the things that show up on the lists that appear that are on your list. Make sure to keep everything that is in one category together and to put the category name with the list. (E.g. Realistic: practical; athletic; straightforward/frank; mechanically inclined; a nature lover; thrifty)

Activity #3

Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2000-01 Edition

Directions:

1. Go to the Internet page above by clicking on the title of this activity.

2. Look up each of the jobs that you have listed by clicking the "A-Z Index" button at the top center of the page and answer the following questions for each one.

a. What are the earnings for this career?

b. What are the necessary qualifications for this career?

c.  What are the working conditions for this career?

d. What are four related occupations? Are you interested in any of them? Which ones?

e.  What is the job outlook for this career?

Activity #4

America's Career InfoNet

Directions:

1. Go to the Internet page above by clicking on the title of this activity.

2. Look at each of the five :Occupational Rankings" with each of the four "Average Worker Education Level" choices.

3. Answer the following questions about what you have found

a.What is the top ten in each of the nine pages that you looked at?

b. Are any of the careers the same for the top ten listed on each page?

c.  Give an explanation as to why you think the answers to the previous question is the way that it is.

Activity #5

America's Career InfoNet State Profile - Texas

Directions:

1. Go to the Internet page above by clicking on the title of this activity.

2. Scroll down the page to the section titled "Occupation Rankings in Texas"

3. Look at each of the five "Occupational Rankings" with each of the four "Average Worker Education Level"choices.

4. Answer the following questions about what you have found.

a. What is the top ten in each of the nine pages that you looked at?

b. Are any of the careers the same for the top ten listed on each page?

c. Give an explanation as to why you think the answers to the previous question is the way that it is.

5. Look at the "State Information" on the "Largest Employers" and list who are the top ten Largest Employers for Texas.

Conclusion

You have had the opportunity to explore what the next level in your life can be and now it is time for you to take what you have learned and move on to that next level. Take this information and make a difference, if in no one else's life than your own. GOOD LUCK.
