Introduction

    Founded in 1931 as a theatre collective to showcase for uniquely American works by American playwrights, The Group Theatre lasted only ten years.  After their break-up in 1941, the members disseminated throughout the country. As a result, the legacy of their work remains a powerful influence on American theatre to this day.


 

The Task

    To develop an understanding of the history of The Group Theatre as well as it on going influence on
American theatre using resources found on the World Wide Web.

Conclusion

Despite its relatively short life span, The Group Theatre has been called the bravest and most significant experiment in the history of American theatre; and its impact continues to be felt. Many of the group's members went on to become leading acting teachers and directors, passing on to subsequent generations the spirit and principles that motivated them.
