Introduction

Do you know why we celebrate Valentine's Day?  Do you know why we send cards and flowers to our loved ones?  In this lesson you will discover many interesting facts about the history and traditions of Valentine's Day.


The Task

At the end of this lesson, you will:

  • know the origin of Valentine's Day.
  • describe the significance of three traditional Valentine's Day symbols.
  • know how some other countries celebrate Valentine's Day.
  • have written an authentic Valentine poem.
  • have created a Valentine card representing a chosen country.
  • have presented a brief one page synopsis or summary chronicling the history of Valentine's Day.

The Process

        1.  You will be assigned a partner.
        2.  Together, you will explore the links to find the history and popular symbols associated with
             Valentine's Day.
        3.  You will write a short Valentine's Day poem.
        4.  You will create a Valentine card representing a chosen country.
        5. You will write a one page synopsis or summary chronicling the history of Valentine's Day.  This
            will be presented to your peers.




Evaluation
You and your partner will receive a group grade by the teacher. Your grade will be based upon your ability to work effectively and cooperatively, the quality and creativity of your poem and card, as well as your oral presentation.


Conclusion

When you have completed these activities you will have learned why we celebrate Valentine's Day, where the Valentine card originated, as well as how other countries celebrate this special holiday.
