Introduction

This exercise will explore the different deminsions of the atom. You will need to understand the evolution of the atom and how we came to uderstand it's role in the universe. You should be able to describe the physical structure of an atom and how they chemical combine.

The Task

Research the atom and its meaning. Research the following tasks and prepare your findings for a classroom presentation. The presentation will need to be at least 3-5 minutes long covering the following:

  • history of the atom(who and when discovered),
  • physical srtucture of the atom,
  • how do atoms and elements relate to each other,
  • how atoms combine,
  • how atoms reproduce,
  • physical characteristics of the atom.

Resources
The following websites will provide you with the information needed to complete your task.

The Process
This project will be prepared in groups of two. The group will need to divide the tasks evenly and research each. Once you have gathered all the required information it will be time to prepare the presentation. You will need to use models to represent the physical structure and chemical bonding of atoms. Be sure to provide information on where you discovered your findings along with all the required tasks.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on content, creativity, and structure. Teachers may want to use a rubric to evaluate the student in this project.

Conclusion

After completion of this project you should understand the physical structure of the atom and how they combine. Understanding the atom is a foundation for knowledge in chemistry. Hopefully you have enjoyed learning about the atom and now you know something new about the world around you.
