Introduction

Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

In this quest you will be studying about different owls.  You will be able to describe your owl to the class in a report you will write after you do your research.  You will be able to plot the geographic location of your owl on a map.  You will be able to answer questions about all of the owls in the quest when this mission is completed.

The Task

You will be doing research on your owl during this quest.  Your explorations will help you:

  • answer questions about the owl you selected,
  • chart the geographic location of your owl,
  • present an oral report to the class,
  • answer questions about each of the owls that were reported on.

Resources

You will use the internet to do your research.

The Process

Here we go!  This is what you need to do to accomplish your job:

1.  Pick an owl.

2.  Click on your owl, and answer the following questions about your owl:

Barn Owl

Barred Owl

Eastern Screech Owl

Great Gray Owl

Great Horned Owl

Hawk Owl

Long-eared Owl

Saw-whet Owl

Short-eared Owl

*What is the common name of your owl?
*What is the scientific name of your owl?
*What is the length of your owl?
        *What is your owl's wingspread?
*What does your owl look like?
*What does your owl sound like?
*What is the life expectancy of your owl?
*How many eggs do they lay?
*What is the habitat of your owl (where do they build their nests)?
*What is the range of your owl (where do they live geographically)?

3.  Plot the location of your owl on a map.  Click on the image below, and print out a copy of the map of North America.  Shade in the geographic location of your owl.

4.  Write a report about your owl.  Your report needs to be a descriptive essay that is at least 2 pages long (handwritten).  You need to include your completed map with your report.

5.  Present your report to the class.  (Your classmates will be taking notes on your report in order to study for the quiz that will be given at the end of the unit.)

6.  Take a quiz on all of the owls presented.

Evaluation

You will be graded on a rubric.

Conclusion

During this quest you were able to learn about nine different owls.  You learned what they looked like, their habitat, and geographic locations in North America.  You learned how to present what you learned to your class, and how to take notes when others were presenting material.  You were able to assess what you learned by taking a quiz about all nine owls.  Your mission is now complete.
