The Process
The unit is designed to cover a week or more. Kick off your unit by transforming your dramatic play area into a barn, complete with hay, saddles, boots, hats, etc.
Idea I:Read
The
Big Red Barn by
Margaret Wise Brown. Discuss mamma and babies and their names.
Make a class book that follows the pattern of "Brown Bear, Brown Bear".
Example of book, "Mamma cow, mamma cow what do you see? I see my
little calf standing by me." Use barn shaped pages and let students
illustrate each page using farm animal dye cuts. Sing
farm animal song.
You gotta see this one. Old
MacDonald
Idea 2: Read The Milk Makers by Gail Gibbons. Discuss dairy farming and the products we get from milk. Follow this up with a butter making activity.
Idea 3:
Have
fun pretending you are a real farmer. Visit virtual farm websites.
