Viaje a un Pais Hispano

Maria Osborne

This could be a six weeks project.  Students can be allowed to work on it at their own pace after finishing daily work.  It does however require imput from the teacher.  Make sure they are on the right track.

The Spanish department at your school has decided to fund a trip to a Spanish speaking country.  They are having a contest to send one student from your class to the Spanish speaking  country of your choice. You will be provided with spending cash, air fare, and four day, three night stay in the nicest hotel in the country; however, there is a catch.  You
must prove that you are knowledgeable about the country you are going to.  The Spanish department has a few requirements. The following links come from all over the World Wide Web and represent a variety of aspects related to Hispanic countries around the world. They will help you choose a country and convince the funding committe that they are making a good investement in you.

The Task

This is what the Spanish department requires of you.

Choose a Spanish speaking country and know:

  • about the country's flag, it's creed, colors, and symbolism.
  • about the country's ecomomy, currency value, and the exchange rate
  • where you want to go.  The department does not want you to be in danger, so you must inform them about this nation's national security system.
  • how to communicate with the people of this country in Spanish.

The Process
The following steps will help you in organizing all the material to be presented to the department.

  1. 1.  Once you have elected a country, remember to focus  on information about that country.Take notes because you will have to define and translate to Spanish.  .
  2. 2.  Take notes and answer the questions the department may ask.  .
  3. 3.  Write a paper in Spanish  that tells about the country you have selected, it's flag, crest, creed, ecomomy, and why you should be chosen to go there.  Grammer and organization are major components.
  4. 4. Make a replica of the country's flag  (8'' x 11'')
  5. 5.  Know the matierial well enough to give a speech to the department (may only use 3 note cards)
  6. 6. Go before the board and tell them in Spanish what 5 things you wish to learn while on your trip.

Evaluation

There will be three grades given for this lesson.
1.  Written essay in Spanish.  It must be organized, accurate,  and free of gramatical errors.
2.  Flag presentation.  Flag must be accurate, neat, and informative.  Must include information about the country's creed, crest, and symbolism.
3.  In Spanish verbalize the 5 things you hope to learn while on your trip.    Make sure the tenses are correct.  Use as much vocabulary as possible.  Pronunciation will be part of the grade.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you are now aware that there are many Spanish speaking countries.  A common misconception is that Mexico and Spain are the only Spanish speaking countries.  Make sure you use appropriate verb tenses. Also become familiar with the country and it's culture and symbolism.
