Introduction
"Harry Potter, you have been invited to attend Hogwarts School of Wizardry".   How exciting would it be to be in Harry's place?  To know that you are a wizard?  Just think of the possibilities that lie before you.  In this webquest, you will be doing exactly that.  You will learn about wizards, design Hogwarts as you envision it from your reading, and even re-enact parts of the novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.  You will also help to abolish the myth that all wizards are evil.  As seen in the novel, many wizards are good. So grab your wands, your novel, and your thinking caps and hang on for a magical adventure.

The Task

Do you have those thinking caps on and those magical wands ready?  You are going to need them for the following tasks to be completed:
                        * Pick your favorite part of the novel and act out that part within your team or with another team.
                        * Create a list of vocabulary words needed to understand the novel better (such as wizard, muggle,                         etc.)
                        * Write a detailed description of the game Quidditch including the rules.
                        * Research the history of wizardry using resources.
                        * Write a brief essay (2-3 pages) over wizards.
                        * Create a model of the Hogwarts school based on what you have read in the novel. You can use                         items such as sugar cubes, popsicle sticks, clay, etc.

The Process

The following process will be followed:  ( The word team is used here instead of group to instill the image of the students working together much like in athletics as a team and with a team mentality.)

1)      You will divide into teams of four.  Name your teams like the schools at Hogwarts- Gryffndor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin.  If there are more than four teams, make up some names to go along with the theme.

2)      Then the teams of four  will divide into two teams of two.

3)      Each team will do one part of the project:  a) one team will research wizardry and b) one team will

      work on the quidditch assignment.

4)      All four will work on the vocabulary, Hogwarts model, and the acting.

5)      All work is a collaborative effort and will be turned in all together as one assignment.

6)      The time period to complete this project will be six weeks.

Evaluation o

Evaluation of this project will be based on teacher evaluation and student/peer evaluation.  A form for each of these evaluations can be viewed by going to the following website for grading guides and rubrics-   http://www.eed.state.ak.us/tls/frameworks/wrldlang/wlinstr3.html#GroupPerformance .                                                                                                    The forms are easy to use and quick for the student and teacher to fill out without taking up a lot of time.  They are also easy for the teacher to check.  This project, since it is a group effort, must be evaluated by each individual in the group.  This will encourage students to work together and not pass their duties off to one person in the group.

Conclusion

What a great quest this has been to increase one’s knowledge of wizards and to study everyone’s favorite wizard, Harry Potter.  Hopefully on this quest you have discovered information to help you better understand the novel.  Do you have what it takes to be a wizard?  Perhaps one day an owl will arrive with an invitation for you to attend Hogwarts.  Until then, keep those wands and wizard hats ready!
