Characters in Literature

Introduction | Task | Resources | Process | Evaluation | Conclusion

Introduction

You have spent many hours grueling over your required reading lists this year.  Now it is time to have fun learning new information about the characters you have met while revealing the knowledge you have already attained. This unit is designed to stimulate your creativity while reviewing for the FINAL EXAM.

The Task

  • Create a costume for a character in literature.
  • Prepare a character analysis for the class.
  • Participate in a character style show.

Resources
Victorian costumes
Costumes of Ancient Greece
Patterns of the Past
The Costumer's Manifesto
Joyful Costumes
Costumes of the Civil War
Gold River Costumes

The Process

  1. First you'll be assigned to a team of two students.  You will then draw a character.
  2. Your team's job is to find the appropriate costume for your character.  Links to several web sites are provided; however, you may use other resources if you wish.
  3. Once you have found the appropriate costume, you must design and construct a costume out of newspapers to fit one person on your team.  You may add material and accessories if you wish.
  4. After completing the costume, you need to prepare a typed, two page character analysis for your character.
  5. Your final task is to participate in a style show.  One team member will model the costume while the other member will present the character analysis to the audience.

Evaluation

You will receive two test grades for this assignment.  One grade will be given for the character costume, and the other grade will be given for the character analysis. To view the grading rubric for each assignment, choose the appropriate link.

Conclusion

I hope this has been a fun way to review characters for the final exam.  You will be required to compare and contrast the characters we have discussed for the final.  I also hope this activity has broadened your knowledge of different periods in literature as well as the different clothing styles worn by the characters we have studied.
